This was my first commercial web site since working on intranets for CSC. Hence it was quite a challenge as I had to learn about cross-browser compatibility, search engine optimisation/submission and how to do FTP uploads. Before I met with the client to take his requirements, I did some research on existing photographers' web sites to get an idea of what was already out there, what features were common, and moreover what features I thought were sensible to include.
While a lot of experimentation was done and several different designs proposed, it eventually transpired that the client had a very precise idea of what he wanted the web site to look like and what text and functionality he wanted to include. So it then became a matter of literally taking these requirements and transforming them into a web site. What we ended up with was a very minimalist, but fully functioning web site.

Visitor statistics

The client had expressed an interest in a means of monitoring the number of visitors to the web site, but did not want a run-of-the-mill visitor counter to appear on the site. I did some research into this and proposed to do a hidden ASP visitor-tracking tool that only the client could access. I decided to start work on this once I had finished work on the web site. Apart from being the logical point at which to develop the tracking facility, it also left me ample time to learn the ASP, VBScript, SQL and Access required to produce it. I found a suitable free visitor-tracking product that could be used as an alternative, should I encounter any unforeseen problems. In the end, I successfully produced a visitor-tracking tool that registers one hit per visitor, regardless of how they navigate the site. The client can view the gathered visitor data sorted by date, page visited, referring site, search words entered, and browser.
I am happy with the web site as a first effort in commercial web development and I'm very happy with the visitor-tracking tool. It was a great learning experience for me.
